With the fall of mobile data rates in India, a new era of digital media began. From watching Youtube videos without buffering to playing your favourite tracks on music streaming apps, the Indian audience has become much smarter.

Yes, around two years back, India lacked fast internet speed and cheap internet. But, all thanks to the game changer Mr Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man for launching the Jio in India.

With 451 million Internet users, India is now second only to China in terms of Internet users. Various Indian music streaming services like Gaana, JioSaavn are on boom. But we also can’t ignore the old music streaming boss like SongsPk and Bytmp3, they too have some audience yet.

According to Gaana, they have become the first Indian music streaming service to cross 100 million monthly active users. This is really a huge benchmark in a country where piracy is a big issue.

Apart from these domestic players like Gaana, JioSaavn, Wynk and Hungama, the international players like Spotify, Youtube music and Amazon music has also entered in the race. And Youtube is a long time boss which reaches about 250 million users per month in India, which is highest among all these.

The global music streaming market is about the US $8.9 billion. Talking about India, this music streaming market is growing at a high pace and has almost captured Rs 850 crore of the domestic market and reaching more day by day.

Music streaming can now be seen as a booming market in India but most of the consumers are still reliant on free services which lead to piracy too, which is again a serious problem.

Besides Spotify, Amazon Music and Youtube, there is another international player which is in the online music streaming industry is technology giant Apple. But yet Apple has not launched any free plan in India like these other streaming platforms. You just have to buy Apple’s iTunes subscription and it costs you money.

India has emerged as one of the largest markets for music streaming in the past few years. More than 150 million users in India access music through these streaming companies apps or websites.

Also the China-based video maker app Tiktok’s parent company Bytedance Inc is also targeting the music streaming market in India with Ressa, its new app.

India’s total population is 134 billion people, but only about 150 million, or we can say that about 11% subscribes to a music streaming service. But with the increase in the number of subscribers every day, top music streaming platforms like Apple Music, Gaana, Spotify are coming up with new plans to lure the market.

We hope may this competition of providing better features and service to consumers keep going because it is beneficial for the audience.
